6 Risk Factors For Online Gambling

The results of this study are important to develop intervention programs aimed at reducing problematic play among the general population. For example, casino education and public health advertising programs should emphasize the importance of using safer gaming practices, learning correct game beliefs and not gambling as a means of making money. Doctors can also use the research results to better understand the specific risk factors, giving patients more chance to develop game-related problems. The authors used an internet panel to examine 1,174 adults who play at least once a month and live in Alberta, Canada.

Identifying the most problematic game mode and the most difficult game form were based on self-reporting and the analyzes did not take into account multiple modes and forms that could cause game problems for some respondents. While this was sufficient to identify risk factors, the causal directions between game problems and each risk factor could not be determined. Finally, there may be some bias in social convenience, as the survey was based on self-reporting on a sensitive and stigmatized topic (Hing et al., 2016a, c). Compared to hassle-free online racing gamblers, Troubled online racing gamblers were significantly more likely to be men, younger, less likely to graduate and more likely to have a lower income, born in Australia and speak a language other than English at home.

They were more significantly likely to experience mental health problems and had a significantly more negative attitude towards the game . This means that, strictly methodologically speaking, the relationships between the game with risk / problem / disorder and the other variables in the analysis are only correlations. The assumptions made in particular in the discussion section of this article are based on substantive considerations that should be tested in a longitudinal study. At 37.5%, this share is significantly lower among players with a problem, but the percentage is still 20 points higher than among social players.

They bet on sports more often, but made fewer online sports betting and considered themselves significantly more as semi-professional players. They used illegal drugs much more often, at least sometimes while gambling, experienced mental health problems and had a more negative attitude towards gambling . An overall evaluation will be carried out, using systematic approaches to identify, evaluate and synthesize systematic reviews and meta-analyzes of risk factors for gambling and problem play. The evaluation includes systematic reviews and meta-analyzes published in English between 2005 and 2019, targeting each population and risk factor, as well as quantitative or qualitative studies. Electronic searches will be performed on Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Ovid PsycInfo, NICE Evidence and SocIndex via EBSCO, and a variety of websites will be searched for gray literature.

In addition, a low level of formal education (Fröberg et al. 2015; Subramaniam et al., 2015) and an under average social status (Volberg et al. 2001; Barnes et al., 2015) represent other potential risk factors relevant to the problem game. The etiology of pathological play is due to the confluence of different risk factors. As with other behavioral disorders, this combination is tailor-made on a case-by-case basis and the amount of expression required for each risk factor to demonstrate a problem is not determined. In addition to alleviating risk factors for compulsive gambling, educating the public about the warning signs of this condition are important components of prevention. Some warning signs are often talking about gambling, bragging about gambling wins, poor performance and inexplicable job or school absences, mood swings, theft or excessive loans.

This should be the case in particular if they come from families with educational hardships. Adolescents with mental or alcohol problems are apparently at particular risk of developing additional game problems. This should be considered by facilities that provide advice and treatment for past problems to avoid further development of gambling problems.

With the exception of lotteries, gambling is a leisure activity that is performed more often by men than by women. In particular, men prefer types of gambling that are considered to be a particularly high risk for the development of problematic gaming behavior, such as slot machines, casino games or sports betting (Hing et al. 2016). It is therefore not surprising that men are at higher risk of developing gambling problems compared to women (Abbott et al. 2013; Barnes et al. 2015; Subramaniam et al. 2015). Younger age groups in particular are disproportionately affected (Subramaniam et al. 2015; Abbott et al. 2016; Hing et al. 2016). In addition, people with a migrant background are more likely to develop problematic gambling behavior than people without that background (Volberg et al. 2001; Buth, 2011; Hing et al. 2016). Although more men than women are believed to play pathologically, women develop this disorder faster and now represent up to 25% of people with pathological play.

Variables to be tested were mainly selected based on the findings of other international studies that investigated this problem . In summary, most studies of players with online problems have not determined whether their game issue is specifically related to an internet game mode. This lack of distinction between the most problematic game mode among double mode players means that the risk factors betflix for online play remain uncertain. Moreover, these studies have not distinguished which form of online play is the most problematic. Therefore, they have not been able to identify risk factors for specific forms of online play. These analyzes are the first to specifically study the characteristics and risk factors of players whose problems develop in each of these forms of online play.

In fact, the relatively high problem game rates have been found among online players (Petry and Weinstock, 2007; Wood and Williams, 2007, 2011; Griffiths et al. 2009; Hing et al., 2014a) is often derived, meaning online gambling is more risky than ground game. As mentioned above, offline modes for part of this group can be the source of game problems. Wood and Williams even discovered that the preference for non-internet gaming was a predictor of difficult gambling among a sample of 1,920 internet players. Therefore, they speculated that online gaming does not necessarily allow problematic gaming, but that problem players are attracted to online gaming or, in general, multiple forms of product delivery.
